The Public Prosecution charged the prominent human rights activist Abdulnabi Al-Ekri and journalist Faisal Hayyat with “assembly” and taking part in an unlicensed protest.

The Bahraini security authorities summoned the prominent human rights activist Abdulnabi Al-Ekri and journalist Faisal Hayyat for interrogation today (Sunday, September 10, 2017). The reasons behind the summons are still unknown.

Front Line Defenders condemned this recent wave “of harassment against human rights defenders in Bahrain” considering it to “be solely motivated by their peaceful and legitimate activities in the defence of human rights”. It urged the authorities “to cease all forms of harassment against all human rights defenders in Bahrain” and “immediately and unconditionally remove the travel bans imposed against human rights defenders facing travel restrictions.”

The prominent human rights activist Abdulnabi Al-Ekri said that he received on Wednesday (November 9, 2016) a notice asking him to present for interrogation tomorrow morning.

Human Rights Watch condemned crack down on the dissidents in the Gulf States, particularly through surveilling their activism on the Internet and called on the government of these states to resort to making reforms instead of imprisoning the peaceful dissidents.

Transparency International called on the government of Bahrain to lift its travel ban on anti-corruption and other civil society activists including the current and former chairs of the anti-corruption group's chapter Bahrain Transparency Society.
