Appeals Court: Life Sentence Issued against Defendant over Planting Bomb at Ma’ammer Entrance

2018-03-14 - 9:01 م

Bahraini accused along with 5 others of planting locally manufactured bomb inside a bucket at Ma'ameer village entrance to target policemen situated there. However, the bomb didn't explode.

The authorities claim that the fifth defendant called the first one and told him that he has a locally made bomb and about his intention to plant it to kill policemen at Ma'ameer village entrance. The first suspect agreed with the rest of suspects except the seventh one who knew nothing about the operation.

The first-instance court issued life sentences against 6 defendants and acquitted the seventh one because he had no links to the crime. The suspect appealed the sentence. Thus, the court accepted the appeals in form, but rejected it in substance and upheld the verdict against him.

Human rights organizations challenge the charges raised against political detainees, since they doubt the independence of the judiciary, whose members are assigned by royal decrees, and since it issues sentences based on confessions extracted under duress and evidence presented by secret investigations and anonymous witnesses.
