Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society stressed that the families of civilians sentenced to death by military courts are terrified by the authorities' measures in hiding the convicts, after the death sentences were issued against them. Al-Wefaq said that the sentences are retaliatory, illegal and unjust.

Al-Wefaq further stated that the fate of the persons on death row and those with them is unknown, adding that the families have not received any information about them following the verdicts. It noted that the convicts were not allowed to call their families and their families were not allowed to visit them as well. The authorities still have not revealed were the convicts are being held. The opposition group also said that no official party has contacted the families regarding the fate of their sons.

Al-Wefaq stressed that the case files prove that the case is fragile and inconsistent and doesn't comply with the most basic principles of justice. The society added that the information included in the case were extracted under physical and psychological torture. It added that the defendants were forcibly disappeared, noting that some of them disappeared for over 12 months. Reports revealed that they were subjected to torture during that period, held in solitary confinement and blindfolded, in addition to ongoing strict violations.

Al-Wefaq highlighted that the sentences are unjust and unfair, adding that the case is not trustworthy as the judge represents the opponent himself, which makes the case lack the basic elements of fair trial.

The opposition society demanded abolishing the verdicts and referring the defendants to an impartial court, further calling for providing all necessities of decent human life conditions for prisoners and putting an end to the retaliatory and intimidating practices that the prisoners are still subjected to.

Al-Wefaq concluded its statement saying that the death sentence is a very serious and dangerous measure in law as well as Islamic and humanitarian principles, as such verdicts cannot be issued in this way without having material evidence.
