Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): The authorities in Oman took Bahraini activist Hassan Al-Baqali into custody on Monday (February 22, 2016). He flew from Iran, the place of his residence, and was transiting through Oman airport heading to a European country.
The airport security detained Al-Baqali who was sentenced in absentia to 80 years in prison, over his participation in peaceful protests, based on an arrest warrant issued by authorities in the Bahraini capital Manama.
Human rights activists called on the Omani authorities to refrain from sending Al-Baqali to Bahrain over concerns that he will be subject to torture and retaliation, stressing that he isn't involved in cases that call for answering the Bahraini authorities request for arrest.
"The Sultanate of Oman has already handed over the Bahraini activist and artist Sadeq Sha'bani to Bahrain, after which he was brutally tortured physically and psychologically," said deputy president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights Yousef Al-Mohafdha.
