Bahrain's SIU Receives 17 Prison Torture Complaints during January 2016

Bahrain Mirror: Member of Bahrain's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Abdulrahman Al-Moawada said that the unit has received during January 2016, 17 complaints about torture or otherwise ill treatment and begun its investigations into the allegations.
With regards to the SIU's achievements during the past month in the cases it's investigating, it has listened to the statements of 54 complaintants and witnesses, interrogated 26 defendants, questioned 28 suspects from the security forces and also referred 3 complaintants to the unit's forensic doctor for examining their injuries and identify the date and cause injury if found.
As for the cases followed up by the unit in courts, the SIU managed to urge a court to maximize the penalty issued against two policemen over charges of beating Ali Isa Ibrahim Saqer which eventually led to his death to seven years in prison instead of two.
The Fifth Minor Criminal Court also issued on January 31, 2016 a verdict sentencing two members of the police force in the Reform and Rehabilitation Center to six months in prison for violating the bodily integrity of others.
