Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's Cassation court upheld on Monday (May 21, 2018) death sentences against Ahmad Al-Abbar and Hussein Ali Mahdi over case of killing Asian policeman Mohammad Nafid in Karbabad.

The Court of Cassation issued today (May 21, 2018) its verdict in a terror case, Terror Crime Chief Prosecutor Advocate General Ahmed Al-Hammadi announced. The court upheld the capital punishment sentence handed down to two suspects as well as the jail term verdicts for the other suspects. It also sentenced the tenth suspect to three years in prison and revoked fining the first and fourth suspects BD 3300 in compensation for the damage made to a private truck.

The Fourth High Criminal Court issued, unanimously, on (June 5, 2018), death sentences against the second and third suspects and life in prison against the first, fourth and thirteenth suspects. It also handed down 10-year jail term to the fifth, sixth and seventh suspects, 7-year jail term to the second suspect and 5-year jail term to the tenth. The court also sentenced the eleventh and twelfth suspects to 3 years in jail and acquitted the ninth of the charges brought against him. In addition, it revoked the citizenships of the suspects from the first until the eighth as well as the thirteenth and bound the first seven defendants to collectively pay 25416.5 BD for the damages caused to the police patrol and 3300 BD for the damages caused to a private truck.

Human rights organizations challenge the charges raised against political detainees, since they doubt the independence of the judiciary, whose members are assigned by royal decrees, and since it issues sentences based on confessions extracted under duress and evidence presented by secret investigations and anonymous witnesses.
