Bahrain Mirror: The Health Ministry said that the number of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) patients registered in the ministry and who benefit from the primary and secondary healthcare programs is about 8664, adding that 4271 are males while the remaining 4393 patients are females.

In its reply to a parliamentary question, the ministry explained that the main death causes of SCD patients were pulmonary embolism, acute chest syndrome, SCD hepatopathy, SCD renal failure, immunodeficiency and infections.

It added that it specified a special section to female SCD patients in the Accident and Emergency Department in Salmaniya Medical Complex with 12 beds for patients of 18 years and above. It indicated that patients under 18 are treated in the children unit. The ministry further stated that it specialized a medical team to supervise the treatment given to them.

The ministry said that female SCD patients are given prominence at the Accident and Emergency Department in Salmaniya, adding that a special zone is allocated for them. Meanwhile, the same services are given to men in a separate place allocated for men.
