Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's rank witnessed a dramatic setback by 20 ranks in Transparency International's 2016 Corruption Perceptions Index. It came in the 70th rank internationally, after it was in the 50th place in the 2015 index.

The annual Corruption Perceptions Index report released by Transparency International (Wednesday January 25, 2016), included 177 countries.

Bahrain's decline continues in the Gulf region, as it was in 5th place after the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Last year's Bahrain rank among Gulf countries was the 4th place.

Moreover, Bahrain witnessed another setback in the points it received, as this year, it received 43 points (out of 100), while last year it registered 51 points.

The Corruption Perceptions Index is based on view of experts in public sector corruption, and low points represent a spread of corruption, bribery, lack of accountability, impunity, and lack of public institutions' response to the needs of citizens.

On its part, Bahrain's Transparency Association called for "establishing an independent anti-corruption committee, and resolving Bahrain's political problem." It also recommended that further measures be introduced to enhance Bahrain's rank in the global corruption perceptions index, after the 20-rank setback it witnessed in the 2016 report.
