NIHR Praises Role of Cassation Court Two Weeks after Upholding Death Penalties against 3 Detainees

Bahrain Mirror: President of the Supreme Judicial Council and President of the Court of Cassation, Salim Al-Kuwari, received on Thursday (January 19, 2017) the members of the Council of Commissioners at the National Institutional for Human Rights (NIHR), led by Abdulaziz Hassan Abul, to submit the NIHR's annual reports for 2015 and 2016.

Abul expressed thanks to Al-Kuwari for the hospitality and for the support of the Supreme Judicial Council to the NIHR to consolidate the status of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The NIHR asserted, in its report for 2016, that the Court of Cassation embodies the principles of justice and equity, and therefore, the report said, the Judicial Branch, deserves appreciation and respect, being among the constitutional guarantors for ensuring human rights and public freedoms. The NIHR also called on law enforcement practitioners and researchers to avail of the principles put forward by the Court of Cassation in matters related to human rights to ensure correct enforcement of the law, in accordance with the kingdom's international commitments in this regard. It also said in its report that it had monitored and followed the verdicts issued by the Court of Cassation, and found that the court was neutral, fair and independent, citing the overturning of some rulings and their re-examination.

Vice Chairman of the NIHR, Abdulla Al-Derazi, Maria Khoury, Hamid Hassan, Mona Hejres, Bader Mohammad, Farid Ghazi, Abdulrahman Jawaheri and Jamila Al-Sammak attended the meeting.

It is to mention that two weeks ago, that the cassation court had upheld death sentences against 3 detained dissidents whose confessions were extracted under torture. The regime executed the 3 dissidents last Sunday.
