2015-12-16 - 12:54 am

Bahrain Mirror: Director of the Correctional and Detention Centers Control Directorate at the Ombudsman's General Secretariat in Bahrain, Hamad Taqi, said that the general secretariat received 128 complaints and 589 help requests in the period between May 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015, pointing out that the percentage increased by 375% in 2014-2015 compared to 2013-2014.

He further stated that most of the complaints were filed by "Jaw Prison detainees over the riots that took place in the prison last March," highlighting that "the complaints of prisoners or detainees were linked to claims of violations made by Interior Ministry members or of depriving them of a right guaranteed by the law."

"The complaints include claims of ill-treatment, inhumane or derogatory treatment, and are dealt with like any other complaint filed by others who are not detained or imprisoned and then they are categorized as complaints according to professional and objective standards such as being related to a violation committed by Interior Ministry member during or due to the practice of their duty. Thereafter, the necessary measures are made such as reporting the complaint to other authorities like: the Public Prosecution, Special Investigation Unit and the Military Prosecution and in some cases the complaints are held," he added.
