New Buildings in Bahrain’s Prison with the Increasing Number of Inmates

Bahrain Mirror: The Ministry of Interior announced the opening of more buildings in the Dry Dock Detention Center and Jaw Central Prison to embrace the increasing number of inmates who were arrested over the popular protests that erupted on 14 February 2011.

Ministry Undersecretary Major-General Khalid Salem Al-Absi and Secretary-General of Ombudsman Nawaf Al Ma'awdah have paid a visit to the Dry Dock Detention Center to inspect the new buildings, six of which will be opened next week - two in the detention center and four in the Reformation & Rehabilitation in Jaw Prison.

The Undersecretary said that the buildings had been designed in accordance with the international standards and specifications taking into account the latest criteria in the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and protection of their rights.

The human rights organizations estimated the number of inmates to be approximately 4000.
